Kat Garland

Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying): MACP, RP(Qualifying)

Accepting New Clients

  • My name is Kat and I am a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying). We might be a good fit if you feel like you are living in a world that isn’t built for you. Maybe you have felt like you haven’t fit in and are hoping to find more self-acceptance. We can work together to find out how to best meet your unique needs. I take a flexible approach so that you can feel comfortable in therapy, but also like you are getting the support you need to meet your goals.

My approach is relational and depth-based. I believe that therapy should look at a person as a whole and so I incorporate different therapeutic modalities and philosophies based on the person I am working with. I am also currently receiving training to incorporate somatic-based methods into my practice. My methods will never be prescriptive and I will never force something that isn’t working for you. I believe one of the most valuable tools in therapy is a strong therapeutic relationship. Your feedback is important to me and I’m willing to think outside of the box if needed so that we can make our time together work best for you!

  • When I left my small town for university, I suddenly found that things I had struggled with had gotten overwhelming. It felt like I had hit a wall. Ultimately learning that I live with ADHD was one of the most significant events in my life. The highs and the lows of this experience and other challenges in my life have given me the desire to help others find self-acceptance and empowerment.

My background includes a Bachelors in Science in Behaviour, Cognition and Neuroscience. I still have a love for the science of the nervous system and incorporate that into my work. However, it was my volunteer experiences that led me to choosing a helping profession. Through volunteering at my university’s Peer Counselling Centre and a supportive housing facility I was able to experience working with all kinds of people and the beauty in their unique experiences.

Outside of therapy you can find me hiking and walking in nature. I also spend a lot of time with my two kitties, Luna and Rory!

  • I believe therapy should be collaborative and works best when we act as a team. Whether you just need a little time to open up or have significant anxiety about therapy, it will be a priority for me that you feel safe and comfortable during our time together. As a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) my first priority is to ensure that I create a space that is free of judgement. I am happy to work with anyone who feels we might connect.

Diversity is a central value in my work and learning. Much of my practice focuses on working with ADHD and autistic individuals and the 2SLGBTQ+ community, but in my professional life I have supported a range of lived experiences. This includes teens to older adults, gifted and twice exceptional individuals, those living with various chronic illnesses, mental illnesses or other various disabilities and abilities, and to many different cultural perspectives. I strive to embody the value of cultural humility and learn from my clients. I am never the expert of your lived experience.

I strive to provide neurodiversity and 2SLGBTQ+ affirming care whatever that means for you. I work with you no matter where you are on your journey, but have worked with many individuals who have just been diagnosed or are exploring the possibility of neurodivergence. But I believe your journey isn't about labelling or diagnosing - it's about your unique strengths and experience.
