Music Therapy Intern: MMT (In Progress)

My name is Katie Douglas and I am a student therapist. If you are here, you may be looking for a therapist to walk with you through life’s big or small challenges. Or maybe, you are looking to explore and get to know yourself better. I love working with creative mediums like music as I find that they can offer a gentle and un-intimidating therapeutic experience.
You do not need to have any musical skills or ambitions to engage in music psychotherapy. Bring me your favourite songs and tell me why they resonate with you. Work through perfectionist tendencies by giving yourself permission to make bad art where there's no pressure to share it with anyone else.

Prior to pursuing my music therapy degree, I was studying and working in psychology and neuroscience research. Before the pandemic, I had a work-life balance that allowed me to be regularly involved in sports, music, and volunteer in mental health peer support roles so I never felt confined to the lab. After the pandemic, I found that my lab work and daily life mainly consisted of sitting in front of a computer. As someone with ADHD, I found that I craved a more creative and active lifestyle that offered more opportunities for social connection. This led me to pursue my Music Therapy studies.
I’ve found that I often gravitate towards roles (coaching, teaching, peer support) that allow me to support others as they try new things and offer opportunities for better self-expression.

I use a client-centered approach to therapy, meaning that your therapeutic experience is designed specifically for you and that I view you as the expert on your own life. I find that I often gravitate towards evidence-based models, such as CBT, ACT, and mindfulness.
In terms of music therapy, I often use a Creative Music Therapy approach, meaning that I believe every person has an inner sense of music that they can tap into to fuel personal growth, development, and creative expression.
I believe in the importance of creating a non-judgemental therapeutic space that is neurodiversity and 2SLBTQ+ affirming. Please let me know if you have any sensory or other needs that I can accommodate.
